A documentary of a nomadic family living in a transitional landscape, exploring the deep connection between nature and culture.

by [email protected] in Falmouth

Nomadic Transitions is a documentary film that unfolds within the stunning yet harshly rugged Mongolian landscape.  The winter weather creates challenges for a nomadic family and their livestock, providing insight into their unique situation and the predicaments they face transitioning into spring. Inspired by their perseverance, pride and spirit the film offers a unique personal portrait of their way of life. In spite of all the challenges of living in the wilderness and severe weather, it is a life that honours, protects, and preserves the importance of tradition and connection to nature.

The aim of the project is to tell the story of the modern face of nomadic culture, with parents often living in the countryside as nomadic herders and the children studying and living in the modern city. To document a land associated with endless wide-open rolling landscapes as it collides with the 21st century and how a balance between tradition and the modern world is found.

Jade Sellick

Filmmaker Jade Sellick will embark on an adventurous journey to the Mongolian steppe in order to produce a heartfelt story.  Driven by a fascination of the fragile connection between people and land. This is something she feels we have lost in today’s modern world. As a student of marine and natural history photography her production will unfold to reveal the human relationships with their animals and their traditional customs that enable them to survive and continue their cultural traditions in the ever changing developing world. Her skills obtained through the study of film production and photography will allow her to realise and create this ambitious unique film, in order to show her competency behind the lens and full potential as an aspiring filmmaker trying to break into the industry.

Panoramic Fixers

Panoramic Fixers are the fixing company facilitating this exciting trip into the Mongolian wilderness. They are the leading UK specialists in Mongolian travel experiences with fantastic teams both in the UK and in Mongolia itself. With an enviable track record of collaborating with a wide range of international clients, such as BBC, ITV, Sky, Discovery Channel and National Geographic. Offering media production services and location management, they have extensive experience in every aspect of film production. The invaluable passing of knowledge and insight into the unique lifestyles of those living as nomads and their strong communication will allow access into otherwise inaccessible concepts and stories that will undoubtedly unfold through the makings of the film.

Angus Roberts-Carey

Angus has been enthralled by film music since a young age, and on joining Falmouth University has sought to improve his skills and knowledge in film composing. For the film, he is going to be investigating the roots of Mongolian music, to realise a contemporary score that is grounded in the film’s context. The score will aim to accurately depict the characteristics of the surrounding landscape and the harsh weather conditions created and experienced across the Mongolian wilderness, ultimately providing it with its own unique character throughout the duration of the films narrative.

The filming takes place in early March, often described as a fragile time of year for nomadic herders as the transition between seasons can cause unpredictable weather however is a pivotal time for the family. Due to the nature of the remote location there is limited solar produced power that is reserved for the families use.  A generator and fuel is needed in order to provide enough electricity for the running of the camera equipment and gear. Jade will be staying in a traditional Ger with a translator along side the nomadic family. Closely collaborating with a translator is essential for the story telling process and development of the narrative.

This film needs a lot of technical expertise, human resources, camera equipment and of course insurance to shoot effectively and safely in such tough conditions. Most of the expenses have been self-funded and we are lucky enough to be collaborating with some fantastic creative people for free or at discounted rates. But in order to pull this off we need to raise additional funds.

We are hoping that you will be a part of this exciting project and we come baring gifts! Your kind donations will go a long way in helping us achieve this film's full potential. We will forever be grateful for your continued support.
