Nightstop Devon provides same day emergency accommodation for young people aged 16-25 in the home of volunteer hosts

For many people, they will have never been in a homeless situation before and will have come from backgrounds that make them highly vulnerable. The majority of them come to us as a result of family breakdown and need somewhere to stay during a crisis point before they can move on to longer-term accommodation.

Last year there was a rise of people becoming homeless of 11% nationally, and 18% in the South West Region, equating to a national increase of 55% since 2010 (Homeless Link). North West Nightstop provided emergency housing for people over 25 had a successful move on rate of 100% in year one and in year two 84%. We would like to expand Nightstop Devon to all people who are at risk of becoming homeless. This will involve new volunteer hosts, current volunteers will have to be trained and new partnerships with agencies. Also, Nightstop Devon is aiming to expand further in 2016 by offering rest bite for young people and their family to provide space for mediation to prevent them becoming homeless.

Our hosts are simply kind members of the public who have a spare room and a big heart. They are all police –checked and undergo thorough host training before having young people to stay. They provide their guest with an evening meal and breakfast, a chance to have a shower or bath, a safe place to sleep, and a listening ear.

Each volunteer host receives £15 as expenses to cover heating, electricity, water, food etc. A care package of toiletries and clean clothes to sleep in is provided to make their stay as comfortable as possible. We also cover the cost of transport to get the young person to and from their placement. The cost of a Devon explorer bus ticket is £7.50. We also have volunteer drivers who can pick up a young person who is perhaps nervous of using public transport, or for hosts which are based further afield and we reimburse their mileage at 45p a mile.

You can help prevent homelessness in Devon by buying a night for a person off the street for £15, a bus ticket or travel for £7.50, or care package for £10. Alternatively, buy the complete process for £32.50. Read below how Nightstop has helped Jason:
