New Mills Festival Lantern Parade and Street Party

A Community project New Mills

Make New Mills Festival Lantern Parade and Street Party Even Bigger and Better

Yes it's that time agin….! Last years Festival, Lantern Parade and Street Party were a HUGE success. The official estimates for visitors over the festival period was more than 11000 people with approximately 7000 attending the lantern parade and street party alone. This makes it the biggest event in a packed New Mills cultural calendar with New Mills Festival one of the highlights on the region’s "to-do list".

The Festival is a two-week annual celebration of community spirit through a diverse range of cultural activities from talks and walks to concerts, gigs, exhibitions, a spectacular "lantern procession" through the Torrs and street party finale which brings residents and visitors together in the centre of town. The overall aim of the festival is to enrich our community experience of, and participation in, different creative activities - but most of all to have fun! Smile

The festival is organised by a committee that is made up of local artists, producers, business representatives and others who give their skills, time and energy on an entirely voluntary basis. The festival committee also acts as coordinator for the many different groups, organisations and individuals who take part by bringing together the information about all the different events in the Festival Brochure.

The festival committee also organises, with the help of the fantastic ‘PaBoom’, the lantern making and fire effect workshops and the lantern procession through The Torrs, a hidden jewel in the heart of the former mill town that provides an exciting and dramatic setting for the end-of-festival finale. Surprised

In 2012 nearly 5000 people wended their way down into the gorge carrying their lanterns accompanied by the pound of the New Mills Samba, to be wowed by the breathtaking fire effects and entertained by the Bubble Man, whose giant creations glittered and danced in the flames. Cool

The Festival is two weeks of magic, but it doesn’t happen by magic.

So we're turning to you for help in funding this year's lantern parade. The more money we raise here, the more spectacular we can make the experience. More fire effects, more entertainers, the sky's the limit. Let's make this a night to remember!
