New stretch target
Our Stretch Target is £1,510
What will I use the extra money for?
£1,510 would cover the cost of the New Beginnings Support Group for a whole year! This extra funding would give the group more stability and ultimately enable more people to access the professional and peer support they need to start or continue their journey from a point of crisis to sustained independence and wellbeing.
New Beginnings Summary
Contrary to popular misconceptions, HIV in the UK isn't a 'thing of the past'. There are 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK, 42% of which are living in London. Significant numbers of people are being newly diagnosed each year - there is still a real and growing demand for HIV support services.
New Beginnings is a support group for people living with and affected by HIV in London. Being diagnosed with HIV can be devastating, putting people in a state of despair and crisis. People living with HIV face being ostracised from their relationships, families and communities and can lose their employment and accommodation due to the prejudices. Diagnosis may also lead to further complications of underlying Mental health issues.
Positive East is one of the very few places where people living with HIV can be open and honest about their fears. New Beginnings support group is an essential safe space where people receive professional and peer support, up-to-date information on HIV, sexual health, relationships, nutrition and welfare rights. They can also build up self-esteem and create social networks, ultimately gaining the skills, knowledge and confidence to live well with HIV.
About Positive East
Positive East is London’s largest community-based HIV charity. For over 20 years we have provided a range of practical and emotional support services for people living with and affected by HIV, with over 10,000 people walking through our door each year. (Charity Registration No. 1001582).
Our vision is a world where people living with HIV are able to fulfil their potential, free from stigma and discrimination, living full healthy lives. Further, we wish for a world where the onward transmission of HIV is eliminated.
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals and communities affected by HIV:• Through providing advice, education and support we enable people living with HIV to fulfil their potential, better manage living with HIV and be able to maximise their health.• By conducting free, fast and confidential HIV tests in more places within the community than anyone else we are addressing the high rates of late HIV diagnosis and preventing the onward transmission of HIV.• We challenge HIV related stigma and discrimination and ensure that the public policy process adequately represents the needs of people living with HIV.
Continuing New Beginnings Support Group
As a charity, Positive East relies on a diverse range of funding. We strive to gain the support of the of the local community, working together we can combat stigma and discrimination.
New Beginnings is a valued and established support group which Positive East would like to continue running and expand. They meet bi-monthly and £500 would cover the costs of two more groups, essentially keeping it running for four more months.
Funding ensures we can bring in the best professionals to give advice and support on a wide range of topics relating to living well with HIV. Without funding the group would not be accessible as many people have no access to public funds, no eligibility for work, and with the inhibiting cost of their travel they simply wouldn't be able to benefit from the group. Many people living with HIV also face the plight of poverty and poor housing but New Beginnings offers them a full and nutritious hot meal.
