Getting a rare Midland Red bus back on the road

The Leicester Transport Heritage Trust want to repair the engine of our 1968 Midland Red single deck bus, No.5905, in order to get this iconic and rare bus back on the road and get it back out to the community again.

Putting smiles on people's faces

We acquired our Midland Red bus in 2014 and it was an instant hit within the local community with its bright red livery bringing back many good memories and producing big smiles on many faces.

We were able to make good use of the bus at local community events and on some longer trips to places in the Midlands where the company and the bus had been a familar sight.

Over the years the Midland Red bus company built up an enviable reputation and for many years successfully used the term "The friendly Midland Red" as a result of its attention to outstanding customer service provided to millions of passengers it carried each year. The same philosophy applied as much to the staff employed who considered the company as very family orientated with its wide ranging social activities and enterprises.

Bus No. 5905

Whilst the Trust is fortunate to have an extensive archive of local Midland Red memorabilla it is our S22 bus which has allowed us to rekindle the fond memories of Midland Red's local association to the public and former staff members.

The bus was part of a batch of 35 vehicles built at the company's works in Birmingham and is now only one of two survivors. Sadly the bus developed an engine fault in 2015 and we took the precaution of taking the bus off the road to avoid more serious damage. The engine is now being repaired by a highly respected specialist. The anticipated cost of repair is expected to be in the order of £5,000 to £6,000 and so we have pitched our appeal target at £5,905 to reflect the vehicle's fleet number. Whilst the exterior of the bus has been restored to a very hight standard the interior is in need of a little tender loving care so any additional money secured above the engine repair cost will be put to good use.

Midland Red in Leicester

2017 is a very special year for Midland Red in Leicester with the company opening its first garage in the city 95 years ago. We intend to celebrate this achievement with an exhibition at the Stoneygate Tram Depot in Leicester on 26th and 27th August. We intend to make the exhibition of interest to former staff, the public who travelled with Midland Red in the past and a new generation interested to learn more about this fascinating company and the role it played in ensuring the mass movement of people locally especially from outlying villages. To have No. 5905 back on the road to coincide with this event would be the proverbial 'cherry on the cake'!
