Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain. It has a mortality rate of up to 30% and many survivors are left with a permanent disability as a result of brain injury. Each year we estimate 6,000 people contract the condition in the UK, with hundreds of thousands more cases reported worldwide, yet there is still only limited awareness about it.
Children and young people, either with their own Encephalitis or dealing with a sibling or parent affected by the condition, have particular support needs which are not currently being met.
They have to deal with the challenge of a serious medical condition and the resulting disabilities: whilst simultaneously attempting to deal with the struggles and pressures of everyday life.
The Encephalitis Society is therefore partnering with highly regarded children’s comic book writers Medikidz to add a new title “Medikidz Explain Encephalitis” aimed at children aged 8-15 . With just a few clicks you can have a direct impact on the lives of thousands of young people all over the world. Demand is rapidly growing from this age group, and your support would significantly help us meet young people's needs.
The Medikidz are a gang of 5 energetic, larger-than-life superheroes on a mission to help children and young people understand illness and medical concepts. Chi, Pump, Skinderella, Axon and Gastro take children on a journey through Mediland – an outer space planet shaped just like the human body – to explain the diagnosis, investigation treatment and prevention of different medical conditions.
Comics are proven to be a highly engaging tool when targeting this hard to reach age group. Medikidz storylines are written specifically by doctors to engage, educate and empower young people: they speak to them at their level, in their language to increase understanding and alleviate fear.
