The Letchworth Festival is an annual event bringing together people across North Hertfordshire in a celebration of sport, music, art, theatre, science, literature and more. From small beginnings, it has grown steadily year on year to become one of the largest free-standing festivals in the region. This year, our focus is on getting people moving through dance and music.
We can do it: but we'd do it even better with a little help from you.
We are looking for funds to support:
Mass Participation Dance
Letchworth has long been a town that isn't afraid to affirm its unique place in the world, as a Garden City designed with the needs of its citizens front and centre, through the medium of dance. From naked dance on the common on Mayday morn to organised events sponsored by major local employers the town has from its beginnings been a place where people have celebrated the joy of living through music and movement.
This year we're inviting everybody, no matter their age or circumstance, to join an hour of dance. The event begins at 12.30pm in Howard Park when everyone (and that is everyone!) is invited to dress up in any way they please in celebration of the last day of the festival.
The dance is preceded by a Dancing City Procession through the streets of Letchworth, supported by local dance groups dedicated to an eclectic mix of styles. Starting out with Garden City Samba, the dance will be joined en route by groups including Letchworth Morris, Egyptian dance, and Wheelchair Dance Sport.
When the Procession arrives at Howard Park, just pick up your feet, pick up your skirts and join the dance .
Proms in the Park
The festival ends with Proms in the Park, a lively outdoor all-day event for all the family. Also in Howard Park, the Proms feature stalls and family entertainment as well as a programme of live music from local bands.
The music line-up includes:
- After You
- Roxy Searle
- The Scallywags
- St Clair
- Dan Bond
- Indi & The Vegas
- Composure (Fearnhill School)
- Garden City Singers
- Jazz Works
The day is also supported by local online music station Floradio, who will be there to provide additional music and chat in the spaces between the bands
What your donations pay for
- The stage: we need somewhere to perform!
- Sound equipment: need to be able to hear us!!
- Technical support: and apparently these guys are absolutely essential, without them, none of the equipment, from musical instruments to speakers and lighting won't work!!!
What's in it for you?
Not a lot - beyond the warm fuzzy feeling that comes from knowing that you've helped make the world a better place.
If you live in Letchworth, it means that you've contributed toward making sure that a music and dance event that is free to all, will go with a bang - and makes it more likely that it will be back again in future.
And if you don't live in Letchworth, ditto...except maybe you are doing your altruistic bit for the wider artistic community. And whether you live here or not, you are welcome to come!
