New stretch target
If we surpass £400, we'd like to increase the funds to £800 - this will allow us to send another pallet to Greece. We have received an estimate inclusive of VAT of £400 per pallet (this is an at cost price from the DHL Aid & Relief Services team). They will be collected by DHL and put onto shipping pallets in London and sent directly to Kos. They will confirm the exact amount once the shipment has been weighed. Hopefully they will come in under £400 and this will allow us to invest in more toiletries bags and items, or depending on need, donate to Doctors without Border, whose work is vital in these areas.
A group of volunteers in Kings Heath, Birmingham making and collecting toiletries bags to donate to people seeking refuge across Europe.
About the project
We are a group of volunteers have joined together to raise money to collect, source, pack, send and distribute toiletries and other essential items to refugees arriving in Europe. We have several contacts in Europe ready to receive donations.
Our first pallet of toiletries will be sent to Kos Kindness who are working in Kos to distribute aid to refugees coming in on boats from Turkey and the Salvation Army in Athens who are working across the area but particularly on the Macedonia / Greece border.
Items will be packed in reusable drawstring bags and contain essentials such as soap, toothbrushes, cloths, wrist warmers, foil blankets and sanitary products.
Where possible bags will be made through community sewing events, but not limited to.
Our bags will include a message of friendship, love and hope from Kings Heath, Birmingham.
We hope to collect individual items for the bags through donations from individuals and local businesses, but we there are some items and materials we will need to purchase in bulk. The main cost will be in shipping our completed toiletries bags.
Our initial target is for 150-200 bags but will continue to supply for as long as we can. Any remaining funds will be donated to Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) http://www.msf.org.uk/support-us
