Yameen Rasheed, a passionate advocate for human rights, democracy and justice was brutally murdered on Sunday, 23 April. Yameen was followed home as he walked back from work and stabbed 35 times in the space of three minutes, leaving him bleeding and unconscious in the dark stairwell of his residence. By the time he was taken to the hospital, it was too late.

Yameen's murder is the latest in a string of attacks on free speech in the Maldives. We as a family want to ensure the Government of the Maldives and the Maldives Police Service  commit to a credible investigation. We feel their inaction and negligence in the face of violent attacks and death threats have fuelled a culture of impunity that allows murderers to roam free.

We ackowledge the Maldives Police Service's ongoing investigation, and welcome any and all credible progress made on the case.  However, given the history of the Police's actions in similar investigations and their negligence in relation to the many death threats against Yameen which he reported, we feel we must continue to call upon the authorities to ensure an independent investigation into his murder.

Please help us to maintain our advocacy efforts to ensure all authorities remain committed to finding Justice for Yaamyn.

Yameen was a prolific blogger and admired writer who fearlessly exposed the injustices rampant in Maldivian society through his withering and witty analysis. As his friends have commented,

"Yameen was the best of us": the best of a generation of young Maldivians trying to establish a just and democratic society.
Yameen never gave up on the fight for justice. We need your help to continue his fight.
