GHANA. March 15th-10th April 2014

Right people, as many of you have heard I will be travelling to Ghana this year in March/April for a month. A super duper experience to have an opportunity to take part in! I will be working within a hospital in Ghana helping with any tasks thrown at me within my knowledge and capabilities learnt as a nursing student. I'm hoping to raise £400 to help cover the cost of my application/ travel expenses. Any extra if I'm that lucky, I shall donate to the hospital I will be working in. Every penny counts and I would be so very grateful to you.

In the major cities of Ghana, medical care is fairly good and accessible relative to other African nations. However, once you leave the major cities, the standards drop considerably and there is a shortage of trained medical professionals to work in the communities and provide even the most basic health cares.

I will be volunteering within Komfo Anokye teaching hospital. Komfo Anokye is a large 1000 bed teaching hospital located in the heart of Kumasi city. The hospital has a full time staff team of over 2700 and operates at near full capacity with close to 500,000 out patients and 58,000 in-patients annually. Allied with Kwame Nkrumah University and acting as a training center for the West African College of Physicians and Surgeons the hospital has extensive experience training Ghanaʼs next generation of doctors and nurses.

Having the opportunity of a nursing placement in Ghana will allow me to see a whole host of experiences very different from those I will ever see working in a Western country. Many hospitals in Ghana suffer from staff and funding shortages and often lack the sort of up-to-date equipment you will be used to working with.

The experience of seeing conditions not normally found in Europe or North America, such as Malaria or Typhoid. A lack of financial resources to pay for medical care can also mean that many cases you encounter are already in advanced stages. Hopefully while working on this nursing placement I will be exposed to all of these conditions first hand, allowing me to develop new skills, gain valuable experience and deepen my understanding.

How amazing will this escapade be…. To  use some skills I have learnt to help others, who will hopefully benefit from my time and compassion. With a bit of luck I will have a little fun along the way and meet some remarkable people throughout this adventure.

Thank You for talking the time to read my page and donate if you have ….. I appreciate you all, wonderful people.
