Helping refugees rebuild their lives

Helping refugees into employment through education, training and employment opportunities.

Project aim

Helping refugees living in the UK rebuild their lives through education, training and employment.

What is the need?

There is a common assumption that refugees living in the UK are guaranteed their safety and security. However, unemployment levels among refugee populations is over 60%, higher than any other demographic or population. This leads to relative poverty, and in extreme cases, homelessness for a lot of refugees living in the UK.

This despite the majority of refugees having successful careers in their country of origin and a high desire to work. They face a number of specific barriers to unemployment that prevent them contributing to the labour market.

With the ongoing refugee crisis and  pledge that the UK will allow a significant number of Syrian refugees into the UK, there is going to be a huge demand for our services.

What do we do?

At Breaking Barriers, we help refugees overcome these barriers by partnering with businesses to offer employment opportunities commensurate with the individual's qualifications, skills and experience in their country of origin.

What will the money be used for?

We are looking to raise £500,000 to set up an employability centre in London for refugees. We will offer a holistic employment service, including English language classes, employability workshops, vocational training and access to our job brokerage service.

This money will help over 500 refugees in the next 12 months into full-time, permanent employment.
