I have been invited to the USA to present my award winning research in heritage skills - I need your help to get me there!
My name is Scott McGibbon and I'm from Kirkcaldy, Scotland. I have a dedication and passion for the built heritage, particularly heritage skills development.
I have recently been invited to present my award winning academic research; " Stonemasonry skills Development; Two Case Studies of Historic Building Repair and Maintenance", at the International Trades Education Symposium 2015. This event is being held at Savannah Technical Center for Traditional Craft in partnership with the Presrvation Trades Network and the International Network for Traditional Buildung, Architecture& Urbanism (INTBAU).
I currently work as a lecturer in Construction Management, Architectural Conservation and Stonemasonry at the City of Glasgow College. After nearly 30 years experience in the diagnosis and application of appropriate masonry repairs. My journey from apprentice to craftsman to consultant/contractor and now lecturer has provided an unique insight of the traditional skills sector.
During the Month of May I will be participating in a 3 day conference in Savannah, Georgia, USA (5th International Trades Education Symposium 14-16th May, 2015) focused ont the following two concepts:
- Building Foundations - building a new culture for building craft education and industry
- Defining Pathways for trades education in the 21st century
I will be seeking to further my knowledge and understaning of heritage skills development, whilst learning to strenghten existings educational programs and build new models for educating the next generation of craftspeople. It is also a fantastic oppurtunity to present on a world stage and develop my skills.
This fund and the money raised will be used for flights and accomodation + meals + transfers - approx £3000.
As a passionate skills development focused educationalist, I truly believe knowledge is power. One of the most effective ways ways to make a profound difference in this world is to learn as much as you can about a something you believe in, then share that knowledge with others. This unique educational experience would give me an oppurtunity to realise this reality.
For all the reasons above I would be most appreciative of any assistance given.
