An appeal from Margaret
Following the announcement by Theresa May of a snap general election, voters across the UK will once again be heading back to the polls in just a few short weeks to decide who to send to Westminster.
This general election is fundamental to the kind of country we want to be. We simply cannot allow the Tories to inflict deeper cuts and further austerity on Scotland and, with Labour in complete disarray, only the SNP are offering any real opposition to the Tories.
Over the last two years, the SNP has made an undeniable mark on the House of Commons. Forming the third largest party at Westminster for the first time, we have made Scotland’s voice heard like never before and stood up for our national interests in a way that our predecessors refused to.
Faced with the most vindictive, right-wing Tory Government the UK has known for some time, it is more important than ever that Scotland has a strong team of MPs who will stand up to the Conservatives. Under the weak and ineffective leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, Labour are more concerned with fighting amongst themselves than taking on the Tories. Week-in week-out, I have watched at Prime Minister’s Questions as Labour fail to hold the Tories to account, instead leaving it to the SNP - something we have managed remarkably well.
When the Tories tried to renege on ‘The Vow’, it was the SNP who pushed for more powers to be devolved to the Scottish Parliament - powers that will allow us to create a social security system with dignity and respect at its core, and that have already enabled us to block Tory income tax cuts for higher earners. As the Shadow SNP Spokesperson for the Scotland Office, I know exactly how hard we had to fight to ensure these powers were devolved, and that it is only the SNP who could have delivered them.
I have been the strong voice that I promised during my 2015 election campaign – contributing more than any other Scottish MP at Parliament – and a champion for the diverse and distinct communities across Rutherglen, Cambuslang, Halfway, Blantyre, and Hamilton West.
Representing Rutherglen and Hamilton West has been an enormous privilege, and I am asking for your help so that I can continue my strong track record of holding the Tories to account at Westminster, and working hard for people right across the constituency.
Thank you in advance for your help and generosity.
If you are kind enough to donate more than £50 to my campaign, your name and address will be checked against the electoral register to ensure that you are eligible to donate. Your name, but not your address, will be made available by the council on request after the election.
