Ryan, Elle, Duncan and I are heading over to The Jungle in Calais on Friday. As many of you know, we are facing a huge humanitarian crisis there, especially as the winter draws in. New mothers with their babies, young children, families, elderly people...all hugely vulnerable living in horrific conditions. People just like us that are fleeing barbaric and war torn areas, hoping to find a safe place where they can work and support their familes.
In the meantime they are stuck in The Jungle. Conditions in this former wasteland are pretty dire, leaving many vulnerable to infections, respiratory conditions, hunger and, of course, the cold. That said it is also a community full of kind hearted, intelledent people, looking to share and learn from one another and find happiness in their circumstance. People have already created a church, a mosque and a library.
Our humanity needs to transcend our political views here. We cannot turn our backs on what is going on across our border.
The four of us are planning on taking some much needed supplies over there this week. We are in touch with volunteers in the camp to find out what is most useful at present. It looks like we will be taking:
- sleeping bags
- wellies/walking boots
- first aid items
- sanitary items
We will also be stocking up with food and firewood when we are over there. We are going to collect the rest of these items before we go, but would appreciate any support we can get. We will be going via Totnes and Brighton where we can receive spare items you may have. If you donate money, we will use it to buy appropriate items in a cost effective way before we go.
If you want to learn more about the situation in Calais check out Elle's recent blog piece from their trip last week or The Worldwide Tribe blog.
Thanks for your support.
