Caitlin Johnson Irwin, a new mother with her child in the NICU, needs your help to receive a HEART TRANSPLANT!!! Many of you remember Caitlin from 10 years ago when she had West Nile and Typhoid Fever. She nearly died, but against all odds, she fought extremely hard and lived!! After re-learning to walk, talk, and eat, she began to re-build her life.
On March 27, Caitlin was a healthy, fit, 27 year old woman in her 32nd week of pregnancy. The next day she went into unexplained, rapid congestive heart failure. She started in the ER in Gulfport, MS and was transported to Mobile, AL. The doctors performed an emergency C-section to take the baby and begin saving Caitlin's life. As little 4lb Patrick was transferred to the NICU, surgeons inserted a balloon pump into Caitlin's failing heart. She was immediately airlifted from Mobile to New Orleans driving a 3 hour journey between sweet Patrick and his new parents.
When Caitlin landed in New Orleans, her organs rapidly failed. She went into another emergency surgery for a tandem heart pump. This method routes her blood out of the body through her legs and pumps it back to her organs. She is tied down to the bed because it is critical that she not move. On the bright side, it did begin restoring function to her organs!
The next steps are unknown, but Caitlin is alive and fighting hard. She is keeping a positive attitude even in the darkest hours. Unfortunately, her heart has failed and she needs a transplant to live. For now, her medical team is assessing Caitlin to determine when a new pump can be installed, allowing some mobility.
Any money you donate will help her move forward and pay for transplant deposits, medical bills, shelter, food, etc. Caitlin will be in the ICU for several months, and her husband John must split time by her side and travel to visit their son in the NICU. Neither of them will be able to work, and any help you can give is GREATLY appreciated.
Please continue to pray for our sister, Caitlin and her little family. Miracles happen, and we know that God has been by our side through all of this. Our hearts ache for the day when this new mother can hold her little angel, Patrick, all by herself. We believe. Thank you all for donating to save her life.
