This Crowdfunder project is aimed at helping me to raise the funds I need to complete the next stage of my opera training.
I am a 32-year-old mezzo-soprano who has embarked on intensive training and a steep learning curve in order to fulfil a dream, with the encouragement, guidance and support from a loyal circle of friends, current industry experts and former professionals.
Just under two years ago I took my first opera lesson. The continued enthusiasm from my teacher, fellow pupils and friends in the performing arts, as well as a feeling that my voice was finally where it belonged, unlocked a hunger to sing professionally. I have since dedicated all my time, energy and finances to training.
I have auditioned for and been offered a place to undertake a year-long opera course at the Associated Studios in London, starting in September. The course is part-time so that I can continue to work to pay my mortgage and household bills but, naturally, it costs and I am hoping that Crowdfunder may help to raise at least a portion of the fees.
Since my debut in the opera / classical repertoire, I have begun making local appearances for charity, taken part in Bournemouth Music Competitions Festival 2015 - placing 1st to 3rd in nine classes, including second place in 'Singer of the Year' - and attended numerous masterclasses and workshops to develop technique and gain feedback from industry professionals. I also received the Purbeck Art Weeks Bursary Award for Artist Development, following assessment in front of a panel of adjudicators, which has enabled me to enrol on the Dorset Opera Summer School in July.
I cannot know what career or roles lie in store but I can promise that I will work hard and devote every waking moment to training and caring for my voice. Whatever the future holds, I am at my happiest when I am singing and if I can make a living from it, it will be a dream come true.
