Project aim

Help Gendered Intelligence take 40 young trans people camping this August

About the project

Camping is the ideal summer activity - sitting round a bonfire under the stars, swimming outdoors, learning to kayak and climb for the first time and cooking dinner on a BBQ.  Young trans people have limited opportunities to take part in camping residentials with other children. Usually programmes are segregated by sex, putting young trans people in an awkward position and depriving them of the freedom to be themselves.

At Gendered Intelligence, we do something a bit special. Since 2010, we have created a trans-only camping residential for young trans people. For one weekend in August, we take a group of young trans people to the Essex countryside where they build a camp, make new friend and have the space to truly be themselves in the outdoors without fear of prejudice and embarrassment.

This year GI is taking a whopping 40 young people camping - our biggest group ever, up from 25 last year. The campers will be supported by 10 trained trans volunteers.  12 young people have applied for a full bursary and many others have asked for financial assistance. With your help, we can make sure that every single one of those 40 young people comes camping.

Your donation could cover:

£72 for each young person to camp

£20 for each young person to take part in activities

£32 for each young person's food

£10 to cover each young people's travel

£32 to cover each volunteer's expenses

£345 to cover the entire camping trip for one young person

Testimonials from past camping trips:

“I really enjoyed being part of this physical project. I most enjoyed the swimming session. I can’t swim but the instructor gave me a lot of attention and said that I had potential, which was really encouraging.” Young trans man

“I only feel safe doing physical activities with other young trans people, or trans people, I wouldn’t feel comfortable at the moment doing any sport with other young people.” Young female-to-male trans person, aged 21.
