This project will get children from inner city London into the ocean and introduce them to the lifestyle and emotions of a UK surfer!

To anyone who loves the ocean and is lucky enough to have experienced it's magic...

My name is Tom and I am a teacher working in South East London and will begin an Ocean therapy project here at ground level with those who need it most before its too late.  I will take children who are from disadvantaged situations and get them out of the city to learn about and respect the ocean before experiencing the magic it is to ride their first wave and experience being a UK surfer!

Something profound happens to me when I get into the ocean and the energy from waves whatever my vessel, harness an energy in my soul like no other.  This keeps driving me to help others find this connection, those who need it most.

This project aims to not only get children from inner city London out to the coast but to introduce them to the culture and lifestyle of surfing in the UK.  They will be equipped in a year long extra-curricular programme building the skills, knowledge and respect for our wonderful ocean and finish the year with a weekend spent at the beach, paddling out and riding waves for real and then experiencing that stoked feeling afterwards with a campfire on the beach and stories reliving memories which stay with them a lifetime!

This year long programme will consist of 4 sessions over the academic year, building on water skills, life saving skills and water confidence.  Leading to a day at the beach looking at safety aspects, beach life and all the activities possible to cram into a day, not to mention getting in and out of a wetsuit and getting in the sea!

They will spend some time working with conservation groups helping to improve beaches and give back to the ocean what it begins to give to them.

The finale of this programme is, after passing the three stages to prepare, the children look forward to the real experience of a UK surf road trip and all the fun that comes with it.  Riding waves, sharing stories of successes and bails round the campfire and building memories that last a lifetime!

To anyone who who remembers their first time in the ocean or riding a wave...

Their first wave will be like your memory of it happening all over again and will be life changing.

To provide the whole experience for each child will cost under £800.

.

If you pledge, you can be part of starting a vital initiative in ocean surf therapy for the children of London most in need.  The long-term vision of this project is to positively affect a group of young people in our community to respect and love the ocean in the UK as we do.  To give them the knowledge, safety and skills to go out and spread this message that the sea and surfing can change attitudes and save lives!

Ocean heroes will have a platform to share with one another and continue to visit the ocean on future trips, eventually becoming leaders and trip organisers in their communities themselves.  Perhaps even Olympic Surfing Champions!

Wihout funding, we cannot provide this invaluable link to the ocean for our city kids which is utilised the world over.  London needs to catch up!

''Surfing isn't the solution to all one's woes or social problems.....it is not a cure per se, but there is definately something there....something that it gives us.''
