Our friend Mandy used to be a fiercely independent, super-fit, rock-climbing, highly specialised conservationist. Following a back injury six years ago, she is officially disabled, cannot sit or stand still, and can only walk slowly for very short distances. Unable to work, she has been reduced to a life on benefits. She is virtually housebound, spends almost all her time lying on the ground, and the only way she can leave her flat is in a car lying on the passenger seat wound down flat.
She is in constant pain. Leaving her flat results in days of even worse pain. She has been seen by neurosurgeons, back specialists, pain specialists, had physiotherapy, occupational therapy, huge amounts of extremely strong painkillers, and hypnotherapy. Despite all of their combined expertise, none of them can help.
Last month, out of money that her Dad left her for her education, she bought a reclining wheelchair. No health professional has ever suggested this as a solution, she has found it purely through her own research. The wheelchair has been a revelation, reducing her pain and giving her independence for the first time in years. However, she can only propel herself for short distances and not uphill. We are hoping to help fund the purchase of an electric wheelchair motor to enable her to realise its full potential.
Mandy hates asking for help, and won't accept any money from her friends, which makes her situation all the more heartbreaking. Any small amount that you could give would make an enormous difference to her quality of life and give her some badly needed hope for the future.
Thank you so much.
