Geordie Refugee Relief 2016 Winter Appeal

Geordie Refugee Relief supports refugees by collecting and sending donations of goods to volunteer groups active in areas of need.

Geordie Refugee Relief was set up in 2015 to help refugees who are fleeing war zones and persecution by supplying donations of clothing, baby care, food, personal hygiene and other products to be distributed by volunteer groups in places of need.

We work with a variety of community organisations across the north east of England to collect and sort donations, fundraise to pay for shipping costs, co-ordinate with volunteer groups on the ground to identify what is needed, where and when and arrange transport to deliver it to them.

In December 2015 we sent our first van load to Piraeus in Athens which was then distributed by the volunteer groups to the Syrian refugees coming through the port over the following week.

The flow of refugees does not look like slowing down any time soon so in 2016 we would like to do more and have set up this crowdfunder to run for the full year. The last trip cost  a little short of £3,000. We think we could run four of these trips through 2016, but would also like to provide support for people that wish to spend time volunteering in the refugee camps across Europe.

Our target for the year is £12,000, but with £20,000 or more we would be able to support a variety of other activities like providing support for emergency relief on the Greek islands, converting a trailer to operate as a mobile kitchen, sending medical supplies to places like Dunkirk, and perhaps even getting some aid out to the places where most of the displaced people are currently residing in Turkey, Lebanon and Syria itself.

We know it's a big ask, but we also know that there are lots of people out there that want to help but aren't sure how. A donation to Geordie Refugee Relief could mean the world of difference to a mother who has struggled to carry her baby for weeks by providing her with a baby carrier, to a father who has arrived in Europe with no shoes and needs to get across the mountains in winter time, or the child who just needs a warm sleeping bag to make them feel secure as they pass through the camps on their journey through Europe.

Geordie Refugee Relief is an independent community organisation entirely run by volunteers. That means there are no staff costs and every penny of your donation will be used to help someone in need.

This is our first appeal for this year and we would like to raise £3,000 to help us get the donated clothing we already have to Greece.  Please donate today, and if you can, maybe tomorrow too.
