Gareth's Nottingham Roosevelt Scholarship

Researching how we can support children in Nottingham learn to love literacy. Every Child a Reader, Every Child a Writer.

We did it!

On 25th Sep 2017 we successfully raised £1,675 of £500 target with 63 supporters in 42 days

New stretch target

UPDATE: sadly some money from a supporter I was banking on fell through today. Please keep pledging as I'm short of breaking even on paying my rent and travel costs, not to count eating and such in the US! Thanks massively for your support!

Wow! Thank you for back me to my initial goal of £500. I'm going to set a stretch target to £1700 which will allow me to travel to more places in the US (I'm looking at tweaking parts of my itinerary after conversations with some interesting people on both sides of the Atlantic) plus I can also visit a few projects in the UK and Republic of Ireland either before I go or when I return.

Please, keep pledging as this has the potential to really make the difference in literacy learning for children in Nottingham.

Every Child a Reader, Every Child a Writer, Every Child an Outlaw.

I've been successful in receiving some funding from the Nottingham Roosevelt Scholarship to spend 7 weeks in America researching literacy with schools and organisations in the States supporting children in what we would call primary school, elementary school over there. I'll be acting as an ambassador for Nottingham and looking at how we can improve the literacy levels back here especially within communities with high levels of social deprivation and under-resourcing. I'll also be promoting Nottingham and Nottinghamshire as a City of Literature and a county of literacy by visiting Iowa City (our sister City of Lit) and Taos (where DH Lawrence lived for a while) in New Mexico, but I need your help...

I can only do this with support from you to cover some of the costs it will take to get me to the best literacy programmes that the USA has to offer. I'll try and incentivise you with great rewards and, as a fastidious record keeper, I will make sure I know exactly what I spent your money on so I can tell you! But, really, I hope you back this as it will help children here in Nottingham progress in their reading and writing through the amazing projects, ideas and enthusiasm that will come back with me. Objectives

To explore and investigate literacy learning and attainment across America, specifically within communities with high levels of social deprivation with a focus on finding new, exciting and eccentric ideas around engaging children and young people in literacy learning!

I will do this through:

  • Engaging with schools of mixed provision and status in the states I visit
  • Engaging with community organisations supporting literacy projects in the states I visit
  • Engaging with “local authorities” for education in the states I visit
  • Engaging with academics in respected national and international institutions
  • Engaging with education policy makers nationally with links to in the states I visit

I will also be acting as an "ambassador for Nottingham",  promoting Nottingham and Nottinghamshire as a City of Literature and a county of literacy.
