Free Lunch on Jesus (FLOJ) is an initiative established by 'The Redeemed Christian Church of God: Holy Ghost Zone, Coventry'. This 'people-centered' initiative allows the church to have a striking impact within the local community in which we reside; we do this by providing Christmas food hamper for families who may not be able to afford a Christmas meal particularly during the Christmas season.
This initiative is very close to the heart of the church as the Church is proud of the many successes of Coventry as a City through the various initiatives and the great work being done in providing tailored support for families and the innovative use of resources for the advancement of the local community. The FLOJ initiative is definitely a worthwhile initiative to help mitigate the sad effects deprivation may have on many households within our City this Christmas. Our mission is simple but passionate, the mission is set to: “Having Compassion, Making a Difference and Alleviating Poverty” within our City.
The initiative which is in its sixth year has in the past covered some of Coventry’s most deprived neighbourhoods including: Binley, Hillfields, Willenhall, Wood End and Stoke Aldermoor. For some of the inhabitants of these areas, the warmth and thoughtfulness delivered to such areas with negative reputations through ‘Christmas Food Hampers’ have truly been a humbling experience for the inhabitants and a rewarding experience for our committed volunteers. Every year we receive messages of gratitude from those who have been impacted by our gesture of generosity, especially where the hampers have provided the only means of a Christmas Dinner for some families. Year on year we have increased the number of hampers we distribute; we recognise and pay particular attention to the changing demographics and population within the City.
This year, the 'Free Lunch on Jesus' 2015 committee is determined to make this outreach mission reach a wider pool of individuals and families. In 2012, 350 hampers were distributed to the inhabitants of Stoke Aldermoor. In 2013, 450 hampers were distributed to the inhabitants of Willenhall. In 2014, 500 hampers were distributed to the inhabitants of Binley. This year, our aim is to distribute 600 hampers to the inhabitants of Foleshill on the 19th of December.
