Project aim

In August 2016 I will be travelling to Borneo for 1 month followed by another month in Cambodia to live and work alongside local people

About the Project

In August 2016 I will be travelling to Borneo to live and work alongside the local people in the Bornean Jungle to volunteer on essential community projects. I'll be working in the heart of virgin rainforest to help protect the staggering number of endangered and threatened animals that live there, such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys (and 8 other species of monkey) and pigmy elephants.

The project is based  in the Malaysian state of Sabah, which has the highest rate of poverty throughout Malaysia. Many of the rural people are living in poverty and don’t have access to clean, reliable water. More than 20% of Sabah children have never attended school due to lack of proper primary education facilities, and the traditions and cultures of rural communities are being eroded at an alarming rate. I will be working on several different projects during my time in Borneo, giving me the chance to benefit more than one area and to immerse  in the amazing culture and traditions of the people I encounter.

I will then be travelling to Beng Mealea in Cambodia for another 1 month, one of the poorest countries in Asia. Beng Mealea is a small rural commune in northern Cambodia. With its friendly people, beautiful surroundings and own ancient temple,  Cambodia suffers from widespread poverty and rural areas are particularly vulnerable to extensive drought during dry seasons and huge crop losses during the rainy seasons, which jeopardise food production and clean water sources. I will be working with the community and local school to deliver a wide range of desperately needed projects, whilst learning about the ancient Khmer Empire and Cambodia’s recent history.

Things I will be doing include:

  • Working on improving school infrastructure and facilities through construction, painting or plastering
  • Supporting the local permaculture farm by developing sustainable farming techniques
  • Maintaining and supporting the community tree nursery
  • Regenerating fire-damaged land so that it’s suitable for farming
  • Assisting in teaching conversational English to children and adults

I need to raise £6000 to cover the cost of the trip, flights, vaccinations and equipment needed on the trip so any donations I will be most thankful for!
