Since its launch in 2015, FoodWorks has successfully changed the lives of over 100 people across Cornwall. FoodWorks has allowed the most hard to reach, vulnerable people to access a life-changing programme of support that has had a really positive impact on their lives.
Without the support of the 182 people who pledged £40, 320 through Crowdfunder in 2015 this would not have been possible. The money raised allowed us to pilot, test and roll out the programme in several locations across the county.
FoodWorks is an initiative of the Cornwall Food Foundation, best known for working in the last ten year’s with some of Cornwall’s neediest young people through the Fifteen Cornwall Apprentice Programme. Cornwall Food Foundation decided to develop a community food programme to help people gain the most basic of food skills to improve their overall health and wellbeing.
FoodWorks has seen some really positive results including:
• An increase in cooking confidence through gaining new skills and trying new foods
• Eating a more balanced diet
• Improved self-confidence and self-esteem through gaining knowledge
• A sense of achievement from completing the course
• Improved employability skills including the benefit of routine
So, what are the next steps for FoodWorks? We now have proof and validation that it works and that there is a significant need for this programme in Cornwall. We have already secured funding from the European Social Fund to run FoodWorks as part of a bigger food programme called Food for Change; this will form part of our aspirations to roll out FoodWorks more widely. Our ambitions are now set on taking FoodWorks to the next level.
We want to be able to roll out FoodWorks in EVERY town of need in Cornwall – working with some of the most disadvantaged people, teaching vitally important food life-skills. We want to produce a handbook of how to run FoodWorks so that we have the potential to run the programme not just across the county, but the country. We’ve already sparked interest from organisations and governmental bodies in Birmingham and London who have seen the huge impact that FoodWorks has had in Cornwall.
We need your help now to be able to achieve these ambitions and change the relationship that some people have with food for good. Starting with maximum coverage in Cornwall, with the goal of developing the programme nationally. With your help we can create sustained change in the lives of so many people. Make a pledge to our campaign today and be part of the bigger picture.
Your money will:
• Enable us to support even more people with the FoodWorks programme across Cornwall
• Access match funding opportunities from potential funders
• Partner with other organisations in Cornwall to deliver FoodWorks as part of a new European-funded programme
• Develop the FoodWorks package to be rolled out countywide and eventually nationwide
