Wales Arts Review of Fire in the the North Sky Live

"They conjure up the landscape of the Karelian lands; we hear the birds singing, creatures stirring in the woods and, out to sea, the ice breaking as the seasons turn... we have been held entranced.  The Kalevala is reinstated and reinvented for our time." Cath Barton, Wales Arts Review

Fire in the North Sky: Epic Tales from Finland is a powerful and distinctive performance created by three of Finland’s foremost folk musicians with leading UK storyteller Nick Hennessey, breathing life into Kalevala, the national epic of Finland. Find out more about the show and its tour on the Adverse Camber website.

Nick Hennessey - storyteller, vocals

Anna-Kaisa Liedes - vocals

Kristiina Ilmonen - flutes, percussion, vocals

Timo Väänänen - kantele, pyngyr, vocals

Paula Crutchlow - director

Naomi Wilds - producer

The version recorded on CD complements the live show. It captures the improvisational qualities of the source material and rewards repeated listening.  It includes characters, songs and episodes performed on the 2015 tour, such as the Firespell (Tulen synty in Finnish), the story of Väinämöinen searching for the sleeping singer Antero Vipunen, the Bride of Gold and Silver and, memorably, the making of the Sampo.  Plus there are new snippets and improvised sections, from a beautiful runolaulu of the beginning of the world, sung by Anna-Kaisa to the evocative story of Aino's transformation into a fish.

So, help us get the presses rolling on our new CD – Fire in the North Sky: Epic Tales from Finland.  Get your advance copy here, thank you for your support and we’d love to find out what you think!
