Hi, I’m Kat: I’m an artist, illustrator, native north Londoner, and I love connecting with people through drawing portraits. In October, I will be embarking on a masters’ degree in Illustration at Camberwell college of Arts. My proposed masters’ project is entitled LONELY and will explore themes of urban isolation, mental health, and the interplay of “living the dream” versus “living for the dream.” The project is motivated by own experiences trying to ‘make it’ as an artist in the city I was born in—and all the triumphs and low-points that have gone along with that. I aim to use my drawing and illustration skills to tell the stories of as many Londoners as possible, all with the hope of bearing witness to the heroic, lonely souls pushing themselves to the limits of their creativity, passion, and ambition.
To fund my MA, I am getting a jump start on this project by bringing it out into the open. By offering my live portrait drawing skills—which I do using brush pens and ink, sometimes developing into more complex digital works using collage. I hope to both raise money to fund my course and to meet potential subjects and garner inspiration for my project. I hope you’ll be inspired to take part and be part of my journey; whoever you are and whatever your story, I’d love to draw your face. You can follow along with my progress on Instagram and see my existing portrait work here.
I’m hoping to raise £3,750, the fees for the first year of study. Total fees for the course are £7,500 so any thing else go towards costs for the next year and living costs. I plan to carry on freelancing throughout my studies, which is going to be quite challenging! (Note, I won’t use anyone’s drawing or story in my masters’ thesis or exhibition without their expressed permission).
