Doctoral studies into the experiences of LGBT educators in the UK - is it safe to be out of the closet?

I am about to enter the fourth year of doctoral studies. I have been studying the lived experiences of LGBT educators in the UK and whether or not things are getting better. I am also studying the effects of staying closeted in the classroom on an individuals well-being and exploring what, if anything, schools and local authorities are doing to not only tackle homophobia, but celebrate diversity within schools. The work is important as people 'assume' that being a gay educator is no longer an issue. My studies are highlighting the opposite. However, I've been self-funded for the last three years as my area of research does not necessarily fall into an area that will benefit a school (?!....). The money would ensure that I would be able to continue my research for the next two years and hopefully publish the findings.
