A year on from the UK referendum, 3.4 million EU citizens in the UK and 1.6 million UK citizens in the EU are still no clearer about their future status.
New Europeans has documented the anxiety and distress caused by this uncertainty.
In a ground-breaking report , we argue that the disruption to the personal and family lives of over 5m citizens in Europe may amount to a violation of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Not only has the UK government refused to grant the rights of non-British EU citizens resident in the UK unilaterally, it has also announced in the Conservative Party's election manifesto that it is still considering the UK's withdrawal from the European Convention on Human Rights.
The European Union has been left with no choice but to negotiate with the United Kingdom to secure the rights of its own citizens living there.
We are delighted the EU has made guarantees for EU citizens in the UK its priority objective and also said that there will be no agreement without such safeguards.
We now ask the EU go a step further and guarantee in full the rights of UK citizens resident in the EU unilaterally.
The EU will need to negotiate with the UK using all legitimate means.
However, to use the rights of UK citizens in the EU in these negotiations is not legitimate.
People cannot be used as bargaining chips just because the UK government has chosen to do so.
Human rights are non-negotiable - that's the point of human rights.
We have written to Donald Tusk, President of the European Council and we would like to invite you to cosign the letter.
The EU can and should give UK citizens resident in the EU their lives back.
Join us in calling on the EU to give UK citizens in the EU a unilateral guarantee.
We also need you help to build a Europe-wide campaign to support this initiative.
As well as individuals, we want civil society organisations, trade unions, churches, mosques, synagogues, temples, clubs, societies, small businesses, all who care about the lives and the livelihoods of the people in their community to show their support for our campaign.
If Europe is about anything, it is about saf-guarding human rights and showing solidarity.
Your support will help us to reach out to millions of citizens across Europe and secure the rights of 1.6 million British citizens living in the EU whose future has been put in jeopardy by Brexit.
Once the EU has granted these rights unilaterally, we believe the UK will do the same for the 3.4 million EU citizens living in the UK.
It is not a question of negotiations.
Human rights and people's lives cannot be the subject of neogtiations.
What is needed is for the European Union to set an example.
With your help and support, we will persuade the EU to do just that.
Together we will unlock a situation that is causing anxiety and distress to 5m people in Europe.
We will give 5 million people their lives back.
