Emergency Shelters for Calais Refugees

Fully insulated, professionally built timber-frame buildings for those in most need of shelter.

New stretch target

Wow! We are so delighted to have made our initial target thanks to so many generous donations.

We are now aiming towards £8000. The additional funds would mean that we could build 8 rather than 6 shelters and fully cover all of the transportation and shipping costs from Brighton to Calais. If there are any surplus funds then we will consider the possiblity of extending the number of shelters further, or making a donation to one of the excellent volunteer run organisations working directly at the refugee camp in Calais.

As the campaign continues and the funds we have get clearer, we will keep all our backers informed of the decisions that we make.

Many thanks again, and keep spreading the word!

PS minimising fees on pledging - use 'Pay with Direct Debit!'
This is just a small note to say that we are charged fees on all the various methods of paying via this website. By far the cheapest from our side is if you pledge to pay using the blue 'Pay with Direct Debit' button. I'm sure that everyone who makes a donation wants as much of their donation as possible to actually reach the cause rather than go on banking fees etc, so I encourage you to use the Direct Debit option! It's a blue botton on the right hand side of the payment screen. Many thanks

We are a group of professional carpenters who work in Brighton. We have designed and are preparing to make 6–8 fully insulated timber-framed buildings for those in most need of shelter in the refugee camp, ‘The Jungle’ in Calais. Each shelter can house up to 6 people.

One of our team has spent time volunteering in Calais to help build shelters on site. He returned with a better understanding of the housing needs of people living in the camp combined with the many difficulties of building on site.

The challenges imposed by harsh winter weather together with additional recent political pressures at the camp, are making a desperate situation even worse. It is essential to get people out of freezing, tents and into proper, well insulated shelters as quickly as possible.

Ensuring Quality:
We've designed a fully-insulated emergency shelter, that will be made in our Brighton workshop, then transported in flat panels to be erected on site. These shelters have been designed to be built and erected as quickly and efficiently as possible, while providing essential comfort and protection from the elements.

Key design details:

  •  Modular timber framed construction provides optimum balance of cost/weight/warmth
  • Composite aluminium exterior cladding (donated by Millimetre Ltd) provides excellent weather and fire protection
  • Tri-wall polycarbonate windows - inexpensive and thermally efficient
  • Shelters sited in groups and connected with raised, covered decks, providing a sheltered outdoor space, away from the mud where families can share cooking facilities and socialise
  • Easy to dismantle, move and re-assemble, if necessary

Costs and value for money:
An initial block of 6 shelters will cost approximately £5000 including all materials and transportation. We are looking to raise enough money to fund this with a view to building 2 additional shelters if we exceed our target. All of the team involved are volunteering their time and expertise for free. All monies raised on this site will go directly to covering the costs of materials and transportation from Brighton to Calais.

Design and manufacture specialists, Millimetre Ltd have generously offered the use of their large professional workshop for free, have donated enough aluminium sheet to clad the exterior of all the buildings and are enabling us to source all other materials at wholesale prices. This substantial support helps to keep financial costs low. Use of Millimetre’s workshop, machinery and expertise enables the shelters to be built quickly, efficiently, and to a very high standard.

Time-frame:
We aim to have the shelters built and on site in Calais by mid-February 2016.

Effective distribution:
Ensuring that the shelters are erected in suitable places, and distributed carefully and fairly to those in most need is really important. We are working with L’Auberge des Migrants to support this aspect of the project. They are one of the most active and established aid organisations working at the camp in Calais and have a system in place for allocation of shelters. They have offered to help us in siting and allocating these shelters appropriately.

Many thanks to everyone who feels able to donate.
We are really grateful to Millimetre Ltd for getting behind the project and offering so much support, enthusiasm and advice.
