Help us to give Ceredigion a strong Labour voice in Westminster, and to help change politics for the better. All funds raised go directly to the local campaign, to promote the Labour party policies 'for the many and not the few'.
CEREDIGION CLP'S COMEBACK YEAR - HELP NEEDED!
Two years ago Ceredigion CLP was on its last legs with around 70 members and not much happening. Both its branches were moribund, so the meetings had become all-member. Now we have over 1100 members and supporters, a flourishing North branch based in Aberystwyth and a determination to revive our South branch once we are clear of these elections.
We began 2016 with a big membership list, about £2000 in the bank and very little idea of what we were doing. We were either new to the party or so old that our experience was outdated, so we had to work a lot of things out for ourselves. For example we had to set up a Local Campaign Forum to select local election candidates and run the campaign, by looking it up in the rule book. Not easy!
We stood in the National Assembly elections, spending £1500 and getting 6.5% of the vote. We campaigned for Remain in the EU Referendum. We strongly supported Corbyn in the second leadership elections. We began attending party conferences again, spending £1200 on delegate costs. We got so busy that we ran up a deficit of nearly £700 in the year, which is not something you can repeat very often.
We believe that we should not just stand in elections - we need to build a continuous public profile, create links with the wider Labour movement and campaign on community issues. Because of that we initiated and led the cross-party campaign in support of the Communications Workers Union (CWU), opposing the privatisation of Post Office services from the Crown Post Office Aberystwyth, to a branch of WH Smiths. This campaign ran from March to November. It was time-consuming and expensive, and superficially it lost, but we are in no doubt that it was beneficial in many ways, not least in inspiring other Post Office campaigns that year.
Our immediate goal for this appeal is a Fighting Fund of £5000.
Please could YOU make a contribution, whatever you can spare, towards the political work of Ceredigion Labour and to help get our candidate Dinah Mulholland elected in the General Election on 8th June 2017
