Help me fight for a greener and fairer Edinburgh
In May I'll be standing as the Scottish Green Party candidate for Craigentinny & Duddingston. It encompasses Arthur's Seat and Duddingston Loch, so I can say without fear of exaggeration that it contains areas of outstanding natural beauty that need Green policies to protect them. It's also home to St. Margaret's House - once a dour council office building now transformed into a community arts centre and a jewel in the crown not just of our ward but of Edinburgh city as a whole.
But like every ward we face challenges. On the doorstep in London Road I'm constantly told traffic's a major problem, and the city council have recently approved a city plan which will only increase traffic through the area. Like everywhere in Edinburgh people struggle with rising rents despite stagnating incomes.
The area needs a Green councillor to fight for safer roads for pedestrians and cyclists, for the bold use of coming rent control powers, for the maintenance and development of libraries and schools, as well as excellent community programs like St. Margaret's House which is such a boon to so many (I have to declare an interest having worked on projects there in the past, in particular the Discover 21 Theatre).
Local Greens are keen to do more but we need your help. Fighting campaigns costs money, and for some reason major corporations don't choose to fund the Scottish Greens (we wouldn't want them to anyway). We're funded from the grassroots - from supporters, members, well-wishers, friends and family.
- £10 gives us a bundle of eye-catching window posters
- £50 pays for a stall kit to make sure we are visible in areas of high footfall;
- £200 allows us to target a specific area with letters about local issues.
- £500 gives us a leaflet, hand-delivered to every home.
So please give what you can if you want to see me represent Craigentinny & Duddingston as a Green councillor next year. Your donation really does make all the difference!
