Members of the Morecambe James Dean Memorial Society gather to commemorate their idol. A new play from PHILIP MARTIN (Gangsters, Doctor Who)

New stretch target

This would allow us to explore some of the options for costume, design and costing that would otherwise be beyond us.

Project aim

We aim to bring to the stage a brand new play, EAST OF HEYSHAM to the stage in Manchester this June.

It's an exciting new work from one of the finest writers of his generation, seventies BBC legend PHILIP MARTIN, creator of the seminal BBC Series GANGSTERS, Doctor Who's VENGEANCE ON VAROS and MINDWARP and a host of great work for PLAY FOR TODAY as well as work at the ROYAL COURT and NATIONAL THEATRE

About the project

The fiftieth anniversary of the death of matinee idol James Dean proves to be the catalyst for more than one rebel without a cause in the latest drama from the pen of Gangsters creator and National Theatre writer Philip Martin and Manchester's Lass Productions, winners of Best Fringe Production at the 2013 Manchester Theatre Awards.

EAST OF HEYSHAM is a brand new play from one of the television masters of the Seventies debuts at 3MT (June 17-19) before moving to Salford Arts Theatre (June 24-25). Lost youth, unrequited love, lies, bravado and James Dean. It's all in there.

EAST OF HEYSHAM chronicles one fateful night in the company of Morecambe’s enthusiastic, but dwindling James Dean Memorial Society. In the lonely confines of a northern village hall, the glamour of the silver screen and realities of modern life collide for our dwindling band of apostles to the cult of James Dean. What is new recruit Sarah hiding? Does everything have its time and die, or are the best of us as eternally young and immortal as James Dean himself? This new mystery thriller is as razor sharp as Dean's temperament and features some of Manchester's finest fringe talent.

Heading up the cast as VINCE is 24:7 founder DAVID SLACK. A stalwart of our city’s theatre scene, Slack, who was recently recognised with a Special Achievement Award at the 2015 Manchester Theatre Awards and nominated as Best Actor at the 2013 MTAs, makes a rare appearance performing on stage. Slack comments that "It goes without saying that I am committed to the future of Fringe theatre in Manchester, and this includes flexing my acting muscles in this terrific role!" Making a return appearance for Lass Productions as SARAH is ROISIN MCCUSKER, fresh from her “beautifully bawdy” appearance in Lass Productions’ Othello. Roisin, a native Salfordian provides a local link for this Lancashire set play.

Appearing as WALTER is Lass Productions’ newcomer PETE GIBSON, who recently appeared with the Complete Works (Abridged) of Shakespeare.

Our cast is completed by another new face, WENDY MCCORMACK who plays BEL. Warrington based Wendy is returning to the stage after a lengthy break having refired her love of acting at Manchester’s Actors Lab and is a genuine new talent for our scene.
