To promote community spirit with the launch of the new Dollar Winter Festival and to light up the main street with sparkling new Christmas lights from the Burnside to the Memorial Gardens.
About the Project
Nestling in the lee of the Ochill Hills in the ‘Wee County’ is the beautiful town of Dollar, home to around 3,000 people and a place of interest to many more.
At our recent summer Gala we spoke with many members of the community and visitors and they agreed that a Winter Festival for Dollar would be a great event to improve community spirit and build on the success of the Gala and Fireworks Night that everyone looks forward to each year.
A band of willing volunteers from the community stepped forward to help Dollar Community Council plan and deliver the Dollar Winter Festival. If everything goes to plan, we should have a continuous stream of lights down the trees of the lower Burnside, followed by traditional-style Christmas lights on all of the lampposts along Bridge Street, ending with a large Christmas tree proudly re-sited in the Memorial Gardens. It really should be a spectacular sight to behold and should help to lift the spirit of Dollar, and all who pass through, over the festive period. The Winter Festival itself will begin with a grand tour of the town by Santa Claus in his sleigh, for the delight and amazement of the youngsters of the town. This will be followed by other events, including: an indoor Christmas market, a BBQ, an afternoon ceilidh, and a performance by our very own Hillfoot Harmony. The highlight of the Festival will be the magical switching on of the Burnside lights and then, linked by a Christmas procession along Bridge Street, the switching on of the Christmas tree lights. These two ceremonies will be presided over by the Gala King and Queen and accompanied be a brass band that will hopefully inspire the crowd to join in and sing a medley of Christmas carols.
As you can imagine this all takes money. Luckily, we have already been awarded a generous grant from Awards for All through the Big Lottery Fund to cover over 50% of the costs. We have also secured some sponsorship from local organisations and individuals, and have been helped by funds from our recent Quiz Night. However there is still some way to go before we can rest.
We ask for crowdfunding as we would like to give the community of Dollar, and possibly their friends and family elsewhere, the opportunity to contribute to this wonderful project. However large or small your donation, we would be extremely grateful for your help. If we all pull together, the new Dollar Winter Festival and lights should help to flood the town with festive cheer.
Please help us to make this inaugural event a success this year, and for many years to come.
