Help us expand our fitness studio so under-privileged and disabled clients can improve their fitness through subsidised personal training.

Hi! We're Colin and Jamie, Personal Trainers from Barnsley, South Yorkshire. 

The fitness studio we own trains people who for various reasons can't get access to, feel intimidated by, or are uncomfortable using a public gym. In addition to our regular clients, Jamie and I use some of our income to subsidise fitness sessions for clients with various disabilities, or conditions such as autism. We’re passionate about health and fitness, it's our ambition to help people who are having a tough time get access to exercise.

Our Project and Solution.

We moved into our current studio just under a year ago but we’ve already outgrown it. It's heartbreaking for us to have to turn away so many people every week that we could be helping. Our waiting list is over three months long! This is why Jamie and I have launched this Crowdfunding project, asking for your help to expand our facilities into the empty property next door. This will give us the additional space we need to double the number of sessions we can offer to the disadvantaged, local community groups and people with disabilities who rely on us.

Why We're Crowdfunding.

We’ve already obtained a small grant and some private investment to get us this far, but if we can reach our Crowdfunding target we can make a much bigger difference. Our £6,000 Crowdfunder target will help to pay for the unit deposit, gym flooring, fitness equipment, and alterations for disabled access. If we exceed our target, we'll be able to offer even more subsidised classes! We can open the extension in June 2016 and help dozens more special needs clients each week, either through one-to-one personal training or group classes.

One of the key legacy aims of the 2012 Paralympics was to increase participation in sport and exercise by Britain's 11 million disabled people. There’s a huge appetite for this. A survey of almost 1,000 people with disabilities found that more than two thirds of respondents said they’d like to exercise more regularly. However, according to Sport England, only 18% of disabled adults take part in physical activity for more than 30 minutes a week, compared with 38% of non-disabled adults.

About Steven.

In our introduction video (top of the page) you'll meet Steven who has Autism and finds social interaction extremely difficult. A public gym is the last place he wants to be because of the intimidating environment, sensory overloads and lack of privacy.

Steven trains with me on a one-to-one basis twice a week. His exercise programme is helping him lose weight, normalise his sleeping pattern, improve his balance and co-ordination and increase his strength and flexibility. The sessions also help Steven with his anxiety and lower his stress levels. Steven's sessions are subsidised by us to allow him access to this kind of training, which is out of reach for most people in his situation.

70% of autistic adults say they don’t get the help they need. It’s a serious, lifelong and disabling condition. Without the right support, it can have a profound -sometimes devastating effect on individuals and families.” (National Autistic Society).

This kind of one-to-one interaction offers massive benefits to people living with learning difficulties, mental health issues or disabilities. The improvement in confidence is the biggest benefit I notice. The physical improvements are noticeable within days, and carers always report back on how much clients enjoy the sessions with us. My Background: 

I've always believed in giving what I can to my community. They are my friends, neighbours and family. Without them I'd have no business! For many years I've raised money for charity in various ways. I've cycled the length and width of the UK, organised charity walks, 10k runs, skydiving, appeared in half naked calendars and even stripped off in the snow! I've set new records, encouraged hundreds of people to join me and raised tens of thousands of pounds in the process.

Many of the people in my community that I'm helping can't access exercise that's right for them. The NHS has no budget; local community groups depend on donations, carers don't have the time or resources to arrange suitable exercise for the people they care for. Jamie and I are genuinely keen to use our skills for good as well as for business. Giving something back to the community that are our customers.

The expected delivery date for all rewards is June/July 2016.Each month of personal training includes four sessions and access to the Dobson Fitness online app. Personal training sessions will be allocated to either Jamie or Colin depending on availability.
