We are a non-profit community project looking to raise £3000 to enable us to provide 62 hours of free respite care every week for a four week period over christmas and new year. We know that this time of year can significantly increase stress levels among the unpaid family and friends carers of people living with dementia, sometimes bringing them to a crisis point where they feel they can't carry on caring for that person anymore.
This is why we'd love to provide free, short break, activity break sits. Each carer that signs up for the free sitting service will receive 2 hour short breaks every week for 4 weeks. We have fully trained, DBS checked activities workers that will go into peoples homes and carry out activities with the person with dementia whilst their main carer takes a break. The carer can chose whether they want to go out or stay in the home. All activities are person centred and carried out after assessment to ensure the correct level of activity and engagement is carried out.
A lot of the opportunities on offer normally in the week for care or activity (not personal care) are cut back or closed over the christmas period, meaning the carer can temporarily not have the normal support, social interactions or short respite from their caring role. This added pressure can mean that by the time christmas and new year are out the way carers can feel they are at breaking point.
We are appealing to people and businesses in the Devon area to help us achieve our aim of providing carers with respite over the christmas period. We are grateful for any size donation, but encourage people to 'buy' an hour of care, the cost of which is £12. The more we raise the more hours we can provide.
We have had a lot of interest from carers in our project and we will commence the christmas respite sits the week starting Monday 13th of December and they will run until Monday 11th January.
We have workers throughout Devon to ensure no one misses out on the project. We also fully support The Purple Angel Campaign. This fantastic organisation is raising global awareness of dementia. I'm lucky enough to be an Ambassador and can help businesses gain a dementia aware sticker via free training with The Purple Angel dementia guides.
