New stretch target

If you're reading this we've reached the target number of subscriptions that will enable us to keep the printing costs low enough to produce our books! We can still accept new members to Club Leughaidh Cuilean Craicte though, so we'd love to have you join us!

A six-month subscription costs £50, and starting in January 2015 you'll receive a new book in the post each month. The books will be exclusive to Cuilean Craicte, and will not be available through book shops. You'll receive a membership card in time for Christmas - a fantastic present for any kids in Gaelic Medium Education. Find out more and keep up with our news on our website www.cuileancraicte.org, follow us on Twitter, or like our Facebook page.

Any additional donations over and above the costs of running the subscriptions will be put towards securing the ongoing future of Cuilean Craicte as a regular part of our kids' lives, purchasing Gaelic translation rights for additional books, expanding the pool of translators, typesetters and designers who will work with us, and developing the club to include fun activities to keep kids keen and involved.

Tha sinn a' sireadh taic airson 'Cuilean Craicte' a stèidheachadh, club-leughaidh dha cloinn aois 7 gu 12 air a mhaoineachadh tro sgeama thabhartasan ballrachd.

We're looking for start up funding for 'Cuilean Craicte', a Gaelic language reading club for young people aged 7 to 12, through a membership subscription scheme.

The more you read, the easier it becomes. But for kids in GME it can be difficult to make the move from reading Gaelic at school to reading Gaelic for fun. It's easy for them to lose heart and stop trying, or for home reading to shift almost entirely to English. For the 7-12 age group in particular, it can be hard to find enough entertaining and attractive chapter books to encourage independent reading in Gaelic.

Club Leughaidh ‘Cuilean Craicte’ is a book club that will send kids a Gaelic chapter book once a month, featuring hot off the press translations of books by popular authors such as Terry Deary and Frank Cottrell Boyce. A new book each month will keep kids interested, support their core Gaelic language and literacy skills, build up their confidence and vocabulary, and help them to develop a love of reading in Gaelic.

We are a group including professional publishers, translators, and parents of kids in GME. We know the kinds of things kids love to read, and we know there’s not enough available for them in Gaelic. Bit by bit we’ll bring them more, through their door!

In order to get started, we need our first hundred subscribers to sign up. Find out more and keep up with our news on our website www.cuileancraicte.org, follow us on Twitter @cuileancraicte, or like our Facebook page.

The money will go towards the purchase of Gaelic language publishing rights for our first six books, typesetting, printing and distribution.

Cuilean Craicte is a Community Interest Company.
