Me and a few people from my university course have been given the chance to raise money for Foyle Search and Rescue which is based in Derry/Londonderry.
Foyle Search and Rescue was set up by local people in 1993 due to the high amount of drownings in the river.
The volunteers are from the local community and selflessly give up hours of their personal time every week to help those in need. Volunteers patrol the river on Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights at the identified peak times of need, from 9.30pm to 3.00am and try to engage with people in distress and ultimately save lives.
Not only do the volunteers dedicate their personal time to patrol, they also provide an education programme on water safety and suicide awareness to local schools, workplaces and community groups.
