Creativity is good for wellbeing, but sometimes those who could most do with a bit of creativity can't afford to buy fancy craft supplies or access it due to their circumstances.
Crafters love crafting, but sometimes they have a bit too much stuff and could do with a bit of a declutter.
We bring the two together: helping crafters put their unwanted supplies to good use, by sharing it with those who could use some creative time.
We are a Community Interest Company - Crafting4Good CIC - with the aims of providing access to creativity regardless of income or circumstance, in as 'green' a way as possible. We do this through:
- Providing digital craft supplies (cheap, sustainable, reusable)
- Accepting donations of unwanted craft supplies (avoiding waste, recycling and upcycling)
- Using both of these for community outreach and group activities (socialising, activities provision)
- Creating social and volunteering opportunities (connecting people, sense of purpose)
This all started earlier than we expected, through working with some guys at a homeless hostel and the generosity of our fabulous designers, customers and even strangers who wanted to help.
When the donations come in, they need sorting, organising and storing. We have taken on a small storage unit (75sq feet) where not only can we store donations but we can also have them delivered there and make use of their meeting rooms. This unit costs £133 per month (far cheaper than office premises we've been looking at)
For our peace of mind we are hoping to crowdfund towards the costs of this unit until at least September 2017, so we know the funds are there and the next few months are covered.
Being a social enterprise, we trade from our digital craft supplies store and any profits/surplus gets reinvested back into the social aims of the company; the more we trade from our store the better and the more 'good stuff' we can do. However, the speed of the donations coming in has taken us by surprise, and we weren't expecting to need money for extra space so soon! Knowing the next few months are covered means we can be confident of having somewhere for people to donate their unwanted creative supplies easily and for us to get them out to those who could benefit from them.
