My name is Roberta Volpe and I have a dream: to work as a set designer in the greatest theatres in the world.
Seven years ago I really started to believe that I could make this dream a reality. Many things happened: I won an internship in the workshops of the La Scala, Milan, I made my debut as a set designer, at the Amazonas Theatre in Manaus (Brazil) and I taught set design as part of a year-long workshop I led in Milan prison.
Still, I have not yet managed to get into the professional theatre work and in 2013 I made an important decision: I moved to London, the capital of the theatre world. I arrived without english and with little money - which was a challenge at first. After a year I got into amateur theatre and designed and built six productions. Amateur companies clearly do not pay so I applied to one of the prestigious schools of theatre here in London.
I have prepared my portfolio and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama has offered me a place on their Masters in Scenography. My enthusiasm has been dampened by the cost of fees - £16,363. It would be half but I already possess a Masters in Italy, in the highest category. For this same reason I can not ask get a student loan, also because I am resident in the UK for less than three years.
Ever since moving here I have worked as a waitress and my salary does not allow me to get such a high loan. Yet I will not give up this opportunity because I am convinced it can open up many doors and really get me started in the reality of the theatres in London.
Thank you for your time.
