The Cotswold Wool Company originated when the owner, who lives in and grew up in the Cotswolds, could not find any wool spun from Cotswold fleece, with which to knit.
The Cotswolds have a long history for wool production stretching back to Roman times and in a similar vein to the regeneration of wool industries in other areas, The Cotswold Wool Company would like to help kickstart a resurgence in popularity of this fine and once famous wool.
The company aims to source and purchase fleece from the (unfortunately now rare) Cotswold Lion breed of sheep from local farmers, giving them a fair price for their fleece. Once purchased the fleece will be sent to our organic producer Gathenor in Wales who process the fleece and then send it to the Natural Fibre Company in Cornwall to be spun into luxury organic knitting and crochet yarn.
As an aside, we would like to start a social enterprise part of the business where we would train a group of house bound knitters whom we would then pay to make beautiful items for the home, made in their own home, thus giving them a dignified way to support themselves doing something they love. After suffering from an anxiety disorder for years, this part of the business is extremely important to The Cotswold Wool Company who wish to run workshops to train local people.
