I am thrilled to have reached and exceeded my target. Thank you so much to all my backers so far. This campaign continues to run until the 1st November. Any extra money raised will go towards the project at the refuge and I have offered a workshop to Devon Rape Crisis to work with their volunteers, who do such an amazing job there.
I need to raise £1300 to complete my fundraising for a five month art project with a women's refuge. Refuges are crisis accommodation for adults and children fleeing domestic violence and abuse.
£1300 will join the £3500 I have secured already through grant-making organisations, including Arts Council England. They believe in my project and I hope you do too and you will help me make my target in 35 days.
Remember, if I don't make the £1300 target I won't get any of the pledges at all (and that means no rewards). But, there's nothing stopping the campaign raising more than £1300, and all money raised will go towards the project at the refuge.
Transforming Lives through Art - I am an artist specialising in working with vulnerable people and I’ve witnessed first-hand the transformational potential of art-making in people’s lives. It’s been a privilege to see anxiousness turn to confidence, and muteness tune into opinion. Over 5 months I have the opportunity to run weekly creative art sessions at a women’s refuge run by SAFE (Stop Abuse for Everyone) in Devon and work with them to create their own artwork for an exhibition and to hang in the refuge.
‘You can’t have a picnic in the rain’ - when your life is risk there is no space to be creative. For the first time in many years this will be their first opportunity to open up creatively. Through many years’ of working with vulnerable or anxious adults I have the experience to create a safe and friendly environment for the women and children to explore drawing, printmaking, painting, textile-art and mixed-media art. They will also apply their art and newly-learnt skills, screenprinting onto t-shirts and tea-towels and making their own hand-made journals.
Celebration! The exhibition will be a celebration by the community. It will take place during the International Womens Day events in March 2014 and be viewed by hundreds of people. There is huge life-affirming value to exhibiting. It gives people a voice.
How can you help?
1. Making a pledge - I need to reach the funding goal before the 35 days are up. Please make a pledge. *You can always pledge more money than the pledge tier if you like, so if you're feeling especially generous you could pledge £180 for the £90 level if you wish, or even choose not to receive a reward. It's up to you.
2. Telling people about this project - Liking me on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ContainedFreedom and following me on Twitter @CathCartwright will also help.
Send friends a link to this page. By spreading the word you'll be helping me to find other potential supporters.
How will the £1300 I raise through Crowdfunder be used? The money raised will contribute to my time to run the workshops, art materials, exhibition equipment (e.g. framing, display boards). I am running this campign to reach the full budget needed for the 5 months of workshops and exhibition.
What's in it for you? I have made an exclusive range of screenprints especially to reward the backers for this campaign. They are signed and numbered limited edition. More about me - I am an artist, working primarily in printmaking but also work with animation and textiles. Current exhibitions include a solo exhibition Living On at Riverside Gallery, Richmond upon Thames, and work as part of group exhibitions in Al Mutanabbi Street Starts Here, Columbia University Library, New York and for Pushing Print 2013, Margate Gallery, Kent. I have 14 years experience of running community art projects and workshops, working with a range of adults and children.
Supporting funders The amount £1300 that I am seeking to raise through this Crowdfunder campaign is part of a larger fundraising target. I have applied for and been successful in raising £3500 already from Arts Council England, Exeter Arts Council and Visual Arts South West.
What will happen to the artwork made by the participants? Some of the artwork will be taken away straight away after workshops by the participants, some of the artwork will be kept and exhibited on International Women’s Day before being returned to the refuge, some will be framed and installed in the refuge.
