A LITTLE ABOUT US!
Based in the heart of inner city Moss Side, Manchester, we are an independent food bank and a project of Compassion Prison Ministry (Registered Charity no: 1161943). We've been operating for 4 years with a great team of volunteers and in that time we have done some pretty amazing stuff. We've given out 9000 food parcels, fed approximately 16,000 people and provided in the region on 145,000 meals - all free.
We are well known throughout Greater Manchester and support of a lot of national and local organisations and work with a variety of groups including young people leaving care, asylum seekers and refugees, ex prisoners, people with mental health problems, people with addictions, people who have been trafficked into the UK - to name a few.
The mainstay of our work is to provide free emergency food parcels to those facing food poverty. However we also have provided and continue to provide the following:
- cookery lessons (cooking healthily on a budget)
- budgeting advice
- parents breakfast club
- Weekly coffee and activity morning
- Compassion Pantry
- Partnership with other Pantry Charities (The Bread and Butter Thing)
- Mission Christmas which is our annual Christmas breakfast party where we give away Christmas presents and hampers and which was actually featured on Jeremy Kyles 'Kyle Files in 2016.
WHY DO WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT?
The brilliant news is that we have received grant funding for 3 years to cover our running costs and to employ 3 part time members of staff. The bad news is that we have no funding for food! We still need to raise £15,900 to buy non perishable items such as rice, pasta, sugar, tinned foods, cereal, milk, tea etc to make up our food parcels for the next 12 months so it is for this reason that we are asking for your support. With your help we are expecting to be able to provide a minimum of 1600 food parcels.
Yes, we do partnership work with FareShare and some fantastic national supermarkets to help reduce food waste. Because of their support we are able to provide fruit and vegetables to add to our food parcels to make them nutrious. But we still need staple food stuffs to make up our food parcels so we are asking for your support.
