"COMMUNITY" is a play written, directed and produced by Scott Davies.
Voices, voices of a dying generation, voices screaming out to understand what it is now that community has become. The men, the woman, the boys, the lovers once unified by the solidarity of love, the unity of strength now questioning who it is that we are now? The prevailing promiscuity culture, the fear, the stigma. The light fading away, faces in a crowd not quite sure where to stand. This play is a journey through the voices of 8 outcasts of promiscuity culture, asking if now at all "Are we community?" and shaking the unstable foundations of what were built on, the shoulders of the lost.
This play is a harrowing, tender, honest and challenging piece touching upon Chems dependency, heartbreak, the underworld, HIV stigma, mental health, Gender disphoria, obsession, place and pain unimaginable. Written by Scott Davies, a new emerging LGBT writer challenging social consciousness, taboo and stigma through new and innovative productions making the most of vast intriguing spaces. This play will be staged in association with The house of BLAH BLAH, an immersive space breaking down the pomp and disconnect of theatre and allowing our wonderful audience to experience these voices as part of these individual worlds, being not a spectator but also another face in the crowd, a face asking the same questions, crying the same tears, beating hearts in synch.
This play will be an outreach not just to those of the LGBT community, but everyone who has ever looked into the mirror and seen the cracks staring back, people disconnected to who is is that we are now? Identity, fear and loss are shared by every breathing person on this earth and this play is questioning all of this, all of life's divine anxieties.
Promiscuity culture is at the heart of this work, the premise of the work is allowing our audience to leave with the sense that they've seen just a glimpse of what it feels like to be disconnected, dissociated and lost now due to how easy this has become, how destructive promscuity app culture can be, loosing the sensibility of love and how we've become so afraid of solidarity.
Throughout the process this production will not only act as a piece of theatre, but as an outreach to all those in the LGBT community, working with LGBT youth groups/charities/associations to bring back that feeling of solidarity and unity. I myself as the writer/director relish the thought of anything I create meaning one person could leave and feel empowered to initiate social change, challenge stigma and leave with a new breath of life. Theatre is the peoples voice, and without it we're lost. Theatre is life and it's my lifetime aim to make the best work to appeal to everyone iregardless of orientation, race, sex or creed. Love will always win over fear and depravity. This play confronts all of that.

As an independent writer, director and producer I'm here today asking every incredible pair of eyes who read this pitch for help! Help in getting this vital story to the stage and get this funded 100%
The £5,300 Target covers set, tech, props, promotion, photography, insurance, venue, rehearsal venue.. and most importantly ACTOR WAGES! I'm 100% a firm believer in paying all my actors Equity fringe minimum so their hard work, dedication and care can be rewarded in giving you as benefactors and spectators the most captivating experience! I adore audience and actor alike in harmony and solidarity as the peoples voice. The longevity of theatre and actors is vital to me as the Writer, Director and producer of "COMMUNITY"
Also a percentage of all profits in regards to any money that the production makes will go towards The national AIDS Trust. It's vital that I make in roads with charities dedicated to improving the lives of all those affected by HIV/AIDS and defeating stigma once and for all. I love my community and I'm proud to call myself an LGBT person and the work of these charities alone has changed my life and the lives of millions of others. Giving back is imperative as the writer/director/producer.
OUR BUDGET UNDER THE MAGNIFYING GLASS! WHAT WILL YOUR MONEY DO?
The House of Blah Blah is a new fringe/artistic venue in the heart of Middlesbrough in which is now acting as an artistic hub for new art work and theatre. It’s a fully immersive space with full licences and management. Myself as the Writer/Director is in very close contact with the artistic director of the venue, i’ve had many meetings with her and all the aspects of the performance/funding has been worked through. The venue for the two performances towards the end of March costs £300, that includes the use of the venue over the 2 full days in march from 9AM/9PM, using both of these days fully for tech/dress/performances, include full liability insurance, Licence’s for music and a fully working bar. Also the venue will be heavily promoting our promotion campaign through all their individual avenues such as social media and website. The performance space holds 100 seats, so ideally for the 2 nights we will be looking to sell all 200 tickets priced at £8, thus leaving a intake of £1600, using this money to invest in all the charities that are mentioned plus it acting as a wage for myself as the writer/director and 1 tech crew as profit share. This has been fully secured and costed and if if crowd funding is sucessful will be done immediately.
The tech has been fully worked out in regards to searching in particular outlets and costed at a general £200, this covers the fairy lights for all windows, the ceiling fairy light structure, Gels for the existing celling lights, industrial floor lights, individual lighting stand for all 8 actors, PA system, small speakers and a supporting actor lamp. This is the full list of tech items required and it’s been fully costed. This has been fully secured and costed and if crowd funding is sucessful will be done immediately.
Within the space were having 8 individual pieces of set and a place of confession, these pieces of set include an old sofa chair, bus stop pole, Bar stool, a train seat, a wardrobe, an office chair, a hanging photo frame and an aching black chair. The place of confession will be a small desk/chair and the supporting actor lamp (TECH) plus a patch of artificial grass to look like it’s dying. All this will be fully sourced for charity shops/ thrift shops and scrap yards. This has been fully secured and costed and if crowd funding is sucessful will be done immediately.
The marketing campaign entails a full poster/flyer and program made by professional graphic designer Greg Davies, who’s done all the posters which i've attached to this application. He’s agreed to do all of this and give up his time for £200, then the other £100 is going to be used for all the printing costs of all the promotional material in which will also be done in association with partners of the House Of Blah Blah. This has been fully secured and costed and if crowd funding is sucessful will be done immediately. This is a small cost to cover myself for public liability insurance for all the time within the rehearsal/performance space as a self employed writer/director. The venue and actors all have their own individual insurance so this ensures all is covered. This has been fully secured and costed and if crowd funding is sucessful will be done immediately.
REHEARSAL SPACE? (£300)
We're blessed that The House Of Blah Blah has a full studio space upstairs in which will be used for the full 5 day rehearsal week, the rehearsal week will be a 5 day intensive period in the venue. A total of 25 hours (5 hours each day) for the rehearsals which is easily in the limits in accordance to the equity fringe contracts that we will be issuing to all of our 8 actors. This has been agreed and secured for mid April with the venue and if crowd funding is sucessful this will be secured immediately.
The props list is long but has been fully detailed and all will be sourced from charity shops and cheaply online. This has been fully secured and costed and if crowd funding is sucessful will be done immediately.
The full photography has been fully costed and agreed with a close friend of mine and professional photographer Luke Anderson for £130, this includes the promo shoot, cast shoot, rehearsals shoot and the performance shoot. He’s agreed this at £10 an hour so we’ve secured him for 13 hours over the entire process. This has been fully secured and costed and if crowd funding is sucessful will be done immediately
The most important part of this funding application is the 100% dedication myself as the director/writer in paying all 8 of my actors the full equity minimum fringe rate in accordance with the equity fringe contracts we will be issuing as i’m an up and coming creator and the venue is also a new theatrical venue. This means that for the 49 hours in total that we will have the professional actors (rehearsal week 25 hours+two full performance days 24 hours) we will be paying the full £440 in accordance with the equity minimum fringe contracts issued by myself and my finical manager (volunteer) before the process starts in mid March. I’ve now managed to find all actors, all are professionals with a long list of professional work with agents and equity. This has been fully secured and costed and if crowd funding is sucessful will be done immediately.
FEES FOR RESOURCES? (£200)
This is for all the other resources required so the price of the ticketing site in which we will be using, the price of any other site fees that we may be using and expenses for myself in regards to my travel/maintenance costs to the venue for each rehearsal/performance day. In regards to my wage/ the tech wage is that we will be splitting the ticket sales between us as a profit share, so after a percentage has been donated to charity we will be splitting this between myself and the tech crew (1 member) So my wages and the tech wages are NOT included in this campaign.
