What We Do?
Columba 1400 is an award-winning charitable social enterprise based in Scotland. We were founded almost 20 years ago in 1997 with the core purpose of enabling young people from the toughest of realities to reach their true potential.
The core of our work is through our transformational Leadership Academies which we run for young people from tough realities and the key adults in their lives. We use the term 'tough realities' as we all face tough realities in our lives regardless of stage or background. Some of the tough realities our young people face are growing up in care, leaving care, young carers, low income families and living in areas of multiple deprivation. They face challenges on a daily basis that mean they have consistent barriers to engaging in society.
Our Leadership Academies last six months and include six days at one of our purpose built leadership centres. Our values of Awareness, Focus, Creativity, Integrity, Perseverance and Service underpin all our work and provide a framework within which young people can embark on their own journey of personal transformation and development. Our young people discover their own core values, which allows them to go on to make positive changes not only for themselves but also those around them.
The most important person at Columba 1400 is the next young person to cross our threshold.

Why Do We Need Funding?
Our funding campaign is specifically for our purpose built Leadership Centre on the Isle of Skye which, since its opening in 2000, has been the heart of our Leadership Academies. This coupled with the ever changing weather conditions on Skye has left the centre with much needed internal and external repairs.
The works needed include:
- Repairing of downpipes
- Cleaning and repairs to guttering
- Repoint stonework
- Scaffolding hire
- Painting of all external walls
- Painting all doors and window sills
We aim for this work to be started in early next year to avoid any disruptions to our 2017 residential programmes. The renovation will ensure the building is brought back to its original high quality finish which is fundamental to the Columba 1400 experience. This will allow us to continue to run our life changing experiences to other young people for years to come.

Our Track Record
We have a strong track record over the last 16 year providing positive outcomes for young people from communities across Scotland and beyond. The organisation's achievements have been endorsed through an external evaluation conducted by the University of Glasgow's Training and Employment Research Unit. The study, published September 2015, highlights Columba 1400's effectiveness in achieving positive and lasting change for young people, with the greatest impact being on the most disadvantaged - including young carers and those who have been looked after/care experienced young people.
''I gained confidence and believe in the abilities of our young people.'' Deputy Head Teacher Graduate.
''To be honest I thought that Columba would be quite boring and I wouldn't get much out of it but after going through the week with lots of activities I enjoy, I really don't want to leave!'' Young Person Graduate.
''I would say that I have learnt more about myself and my capabilities in a week than what I have most of my life.'' Young Person Graduate.
''I have really learned how to trust not only others but myself too. It has been an amazing week, honestly life changing.'' Young Person Graduate.
