In 2012 a group of volunteers from Dover District decided to re-launch a community project. UYC Experience was a radio show that had been specifically developed to act as a 'springboard' for new talent. Working with writers, directors, artists, musicians, comedians and aspiring entrepreneurs. The new show found a home on Dover Community Radio where it flourished - supporting over 150 artists and musicians.
Late 2014 the team decided to start developing their first festival. By summer 2015 Chuff Fest was born. The line up of artists was incredible - Eden Circle, Rudy Warman and the Heavy Weather, Gentlemen of Few, Malcolm Bruce, Will Johns, Rietta Austin, Saiichi Sugiyama, Splink, Bram Stokers PLUS loads more. The festival was split across two days and set in two different open air venues. The English weather was not hugely favourable but everybody had a great time.
The story does not end there. In 2016 the UYC Crew embarked on a brand new venture - Deal Radio (www.dealradio.co.uk) . The team joined forces with the Astor Community Theatre in Deal to develop a brand new multi media communication platform. Listening figures have been exceptional for a new online radio station - 2000+ per month. In its first 6 months the station won 5 separate awards for best Radio Station, Best Radio Show and Best Local station.
This year Deal Radio and UYC present Chuff Fest from their new home in Deal - working with another great new venue - The Ocean Rooms. The line up is equally impressive as it was in 2015 with some stand out names. In particular the pairing of Pete Brown (lyricist for Cream, Beat poet and all round jazz/bluesman) and the incredible Krissy Matthews (tipped as THE best new UK Bluesman). We also have Big River, Peckham Cowboys, Jasmine Rodgers (Paul Rodgers daughter), Will Johns, Attack on Mars, Smalltown Missfits, Sam Mummery, Tin Foil Astronauts plus many more. The whole event will be broadcast live to the world on both days via Deal Radio.
We are keeping ticket sales low to attract more people - the weekend ticket in advance is £10, with day tickets at £7 on the day.
As all the people involved are volunteers and most bands are supporting with no fee (some expenses) we really want to have a way to repay and re-invest for next year. At the moment we are still at least £2000 short of our target to make this really incredible festival a major success. Your help could really make the difference and allow this important local springboard to continue.
In addition, we are pledging to support a very brave young girl from Dover. Kelly Turner has been diagnosed with a rare cancer and her family are currently trying to raise money to get her to America for treatment. UYC, Deal Radio and Roulette are already supported the campaign with projects and events. We have decided that any extra monies recieved above our pledge total will be passed straight on to the Kelly Turner Appeal.
