About the project
My name is Keely Holland, I am 14 years old and a student at Ifield Community College in Crawley. I am participating in an expedition to Cambodia in the summer of 2016. The project is run by Camp Cambodia but fully supported by my school. This will be a four-week expedition and will include community development work, environmental projects and wildlife conservation. Cambodia suffers from widespread poverty. So, while I am on my expedition i will be participating in many projects which benefit the local community of Beng Mealea. For example, I will be improving schools and facilities through construction, helping local farmers, supporting the tree nursery, regenerating fire-damaged land and assisting in teaching english to both adults and children. Furthermore, the expedition includes a four to five day trek through the jungle which will require and build perserverance and motivation. During my visit I will also have the opportunity to explore the community, history and culture of Cambodia.
This expedition is extremely important to me because I feel that I will acquire and develop many important life skills, such as communicating in a team, improving my leadership skills, building resilience and confidence. During my expedition I will face challenges that I intend to overcome with motivation. I am looking forward to lending a hand to the community and I hope to experience a new culture and way of living, as well as returing home as a stronger, more confident person.
