The Surrey Choices Camberley Community Group is based at the Ian Goodchild Centre along the Knoll Road. The group is designed to support adults with disabilites such as, Downs Syndrome, Autism, Cerebral Palsy and Learning Difficulties. In the summer the group was very kindly donated lots of beautiful flowers by 'The Wheatsheaf Pub' based in Heatherside. The group really enjoyed spending time in their small but beautiful garden space. Each day members of the group watered and tended to the plants, they took great pride in their space.
Sadly we came into the base on the 19th of December to find that it had been mindlessly vandalised. All of our beautiful plants had been trashed and thrown in to the pond next door. We have salavaged as much as possible but our garden is sadly ruined.
Lead staff of the group Linda Phillips says “The gardening group really enjoyed spending time tending to the plants outside. It gives the guys a sense of responsibility and is therapeutic for them. They enjoy sitting in the garden and having lunch, along with learning about the plants. Gardening tasks can help develop an individual’s ability to socialise, make friends, and gain practical skills that make them more independent and self-reliant. The garden space meant so much to our group and it is a shame that some people are so careless and thoughtless on how their actions will effect others.”
After writing to the local newspaper that initally covered our summertime donations, we have had many people offering to support our cause, so I have made this page to do just that!
The long term aim for the garden space is to astroturf it and place four big brightly coloured troughs filled with beautiful plants in it. We have kindly been given the troughs by another group similar to ours.
It would be wonderful to get our space back to the beautiful and well loved garden that it originally was, thank you for reading our page and for supporting our cause. Any donation is greatly appreciated, we'll be having a big opening of the garden space when it is complete and you'll all be invited.
