Turning Earth Ceramics is an open access ceramics studio based in Hoxton, East London. The aim was to create a creative and peaceful space for a community of ceramicists; from established professional artists to complete beginners.
For those that haven’t followed our story – Turning Earth was born from an idea by its founder Tallie, when she spent time in California pursuing her creative dreams. She became a member of a ceramics studio and fell in love with the art. On her return to the UK she decided to create a similar studio – a place where people can learn, create and be part of a community.
Thanks to the incredible support of our backers, Turning Earth became a reality and opened last year on November 28th, (Thanksgiving Day for the Americans!). We smashed our target, made £13,660 and created a new home for the ceramics community in Hackney.
The studio is now a busy, happy and creative space – located underneath beautiful railway arches in Hoxton. In the seven months we’ve been open the space has been transformed – as well as making it look good (with exposed brick walls, a mezzanine lounge and greenery) – we’ve kitted it out with an extensive set of tools and run classes to help newcomers take their first steps into the ceramics world.
We’ve had some great success stories with our classes. Jim, a doctor by profession, completed a beginner’s class with us and is now a devoted member, creating beautiful wheel thrown ceramics. And Jono, a garden designer – who did a 12 week class and now, with the help of his Turning Earth membership, has switched careers and launched his own line of ceramics.
We hope to continue to offer a supportive, fun and creative studio. We’ve recently launched private tuition for members, making the studio even more accessible for beginners and have lots of plans for the future – including talks, sample sales and a new studio in West London.
