The Art of Surfing

The Art of Surfing was a collaboration between some of the best emerging artists coming out of Cornwall. The idea was to make a film showing the skill of creating hand crafted surfboards from Grey Black White studio in Newquay.

The project was a unique collaboration between an all Cornish team including artist (Ben Allen), film producer (Tim Boydell from Light Colour Sound), manufacturer (Tris Cokes from Homeblown), arts space (Sara Black from greyblackwhite), board shaper and surf company (Matt Adams and Tom Cullen from Adams Surfboards), photographer (Callum Sampson from Callum Sampson Photography), and an upcoming Cornish surfer (Georgie Timson, team-rider for Adams Surfboards Georgie Timson-surfer).

The team needed £1,500 to produce the film. They looked to Crowdfunder for means of funding but were also applying for other pots of money. It was FEAST (which is Arts Council funded) who awarded the all Cornish crew with a £1,500 grant if their project succeed on the crowdfunding platform – which it did!

Since raising the money on Crowdfunder and being awarded the Arts Council grant The Art of Surfing have gone on to produce their film which was shortlisted in this years London Short Surf Film Festival, who are yet to announce a winner.

The money awarded from the Arts Council has enabled the team to make a film of amazing quality and use talent from all over Cornwall, showcasing what a creative place the county is.
