Children’s charity Kids Company is facing unprecedented numbers of vulnerable children and young people seeking their support this Christmas.
To help them meet this challenge they have turned to Crowdfunder. They were surprised and moved by the kindness of the public when over a thousand people responded to the plight of their children by pledging over £30,000 in just one day to their “Give the gift of Christmas” crowdfunder appeal.
On Christmas Day, Kids Company will host a huge community Christmas party, providing much needed hot meals, presents and games for over 4,000 disadvantaged children and their families. The charity also supports a further 12,000 children and their families throughout London with emergency food parcels and in just two years, has seen a 200% increase in the number of vulnerable children and families needing their support over Christmas.
This is the first time that Kids Company has partnered with the innovative fundraising platform Crowdfunder and aims to raise £100,000 for their Christmas support. Kids Company has diversified their fundraising efforts and in doing so has expanded the expectations of the crowdfunding model for charities. Kids Company’s “Give the gift of Christmas” Crowdfunder campaign is a pioneering move for the children’s charity that will change the landscape of charity fundraising in the UK.
Camila Batmanghelidjh, Founder and Chief Executive of Kids Company said: “When you are left alone on Christmas Day, the most painful shame takes over. No family or friend to turn to on a day when everyone is gathered together. It is for the children, young people and traumatised carers who are terrified of Christmas that we open on Christmas Day at Kids Company. It’s a joyful, mad, ramshackle day enriched by the generosity of complete strangers. On the 25th of December we bring together those who have needs and those who can meet them in one big celebration”
Graeme Roy, Head of Marketing, Crowdfunder said; “We are delighted to partner with Kids Company for such a fantastic cause. This campaign has a devastatingly honest and real message and, alongside that, is also bringing ground-breaking innovation to the charity fundraising sector. By crowdfunding such an incredible target, Kids Company is bringing transparency and unity to supporters, gathering vast audiences together for the greater good. This campaign marks a real-timeshift in the future of alternative finance and the merge with the charitable sector.”
Kids Company’s partners such as Elemis, Smythson, Harvey Nichols, Sisley and Katharine Hamnett have rallied behind the cause, donating some fantastic rewards to generate further interest. Tweets from celebrity supporters including; Hugh Grant, Caitlin Moran, Florence Welch and Rufus Hound have also helped to generate support.
For a vulnerable child Christmas Day can be a devastating combination of shame, loneliness and despair. Without Kids Company, many children would wake up without any presents to look forward to and many admit that they wouldn’t even have a hot meal. Kids Company staff and an army of volunteers will work together on Christmas Day to create a winter wonderland filled with toys, games, a Santa’s grotto and a hot Christmas lunch for all.
